GWLN Commences Annual Scholarships Aimed at Women Leaders

Madison, Wis. — On November 15, the Global Women’s Leadership Network (GWLN), an initiative by the Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions (WFCU), initiated its yearly scholarship program. This opportunity, available in 2024, targets women within the credit union sphere, offering them avenues to enhance their leadership skills.

The GWLN 2024 scholarship will grant up to four (4) recipients the chance to participate in the World Credit Union Conference (WCUC) in Boston, MA, USA, from July 21 to 24. This conference serves as the largest congregation of credit union professionals globally. The GWLN scholarship encompasses airfare, accommodation, and registration fees for the 2024 WCUC.

Since 2009, GWLN has honored 100 scholarships to female leaders in the credit union domain, spanning over 30 countries. These annual accolades recognize individuals who exhibit leadership qualities and a dedication to improving livelihoods through financial cooperatives.

The scholars will immerse themselves in the heart of the global credit union movement across five (5) days of comprehensive learning, networking, and knowledge exchange. Throughout WCUC, the 2024 scholars will engage in all GWLN events, interact with scholarship advocates, GWLN members, and Sister Society leaders, fostering connections with conference attendees. Emphasizing professional growth, scholars will partake in interactive discussions, broadening their expertise and cultivating professional relationships during the conference.

Naddian Abraham-Damier, a 2023 scholar who attended the World Credit Union Conference in Vancouver, Canada, expressed, “I was drawn to GWLN because of its mission to create a more equitable world, where women have equal access to opportunities and resources as their male counterparts. As someone passionate about women's leadership and gender equity, GWLN offers a meaningful and impactful way for me to get involved and make a difference.”

These scholarships are made viable through funding from GWLN memberships and sponsorships from industry champions. In 2023, sponsors included Co-op Solutions, TruStage, Origence, PSCU, and the Susan Adams Scholarship Fund, established in honor of former Entrust Financial Credit Union CEO Susan Adams, supported by One AZ Credit Union.

Lena Giakoumopoulos, GWLN Director, stated, “GWLN will be commemorating 15 years in 2024, marking an exhilarating period for the network. The annual scholarship program remains pivotal in our pursuit of advancing women into leadership roles within our global movement. We have witnessed the tremendous impact scholars have had on women within their credit unions and communities. It is imperative to persist in our collective endeavors to expand this program.”

The scholarship application window will close on December 15, 2023, with winners announced in January 2024.
